President Mark Killingsworth presided over today’s meeting. Jerome Brown provided the opening prayer. Lucy Sanguinetti led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. The meeting was held at the Holiday Inn North and on Zoom. Joe Bost thanked those who helped with today’s meeting.
Brandon Hodges then introduced today’s guest speaker, Randy Pierce. Randy is the Director of the Mississippi Judicial College at the University of Mississippi. He previously served on the Mississippi Supreme Court. He earned his undergraduate degree in accounting and a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi.
The Judicial College was formed in 1970 using a $70,000 grant and is the only college in the state that provides continuing education training for judges, chancery clerks, court reporters and others. It is funded today through the legislature’s general fund. Its national counterpart is the National Judicial College in Reno, NV.
During the COVID shutdown, Randy realized that courts had to remain open. The College developed ways for them to stay open virtually. Judges were trained on how to use Zoom. During COVID an actual trial was conducted in a convention center. The center allowed space for those participating in the trial to exercise safe distances from each other. Randy says the Judicial College touches every entity in Mississippi. The College was the first in the nation to facilitate getting courtrooms back open.
While serving on the Supreme Court, Randy decided that he wanted to try his hand at writing. Thus far he has published four books.
Mark then introduced his guest, Coty Primeaux. Coty has applied for membership in the club.
Mark thanked Randy for his presentation. There being no further business to come before the club, Mark adjourned the meeting with our motto: “Service Above Self.”
