Mallory Donald presided over the meeting. Mike Ratliff provided the opening prayer.  Latreaka Rankin led in the Pledge of Allegiance. Mallory then led the club in the Four Way Test. The meeting was held at the Mugshots Bar and Grill in Hattiesburg.

Mallory reported that a Rotary District Leadership Training seminar is scheduled for June 10th. Mallory sent an email with additional information to all members earlier today. You can register for the event on the district’s website.

Annie Jackson then introduced today’s guest speakers. They updated the Club on the state of legalized marijuana in Mississippi. They were representing the Mississippi Independent Cannabis Association.

The medical use of marijuana was legalized in Mississippi by the state legislature in 2018. MICA began selling marijuana to approved patients in January 2019. It is estimated that there are 8,500 patients in Mississippi. They are being served by 138 licensed facilities. Fifty-two of the facilities are growing. The Hattiesburg area has 12 dispensaries. There are currently 232 doctors in the state who can certify a person who needs medical marijuana. The entire operation is operated under the supervision of the Mississippi Department of Health. They provide approved patients with a license card.

Mega providers began moving in the state when they realized there was a demand. The operations have made it difficult for the smaller facilities to remain in business. Growers have been very productive since legalization. The state currently has an abundant supply of medical marijuana, but the demand is low compared to supply. This has driven the cost of medical marijuana down substantially. It is estimated that adult use of marijuana will be legalized in the state within the next three to five years.

There are 12 qualifying medical conditions approved by the Health Department. They are cancer, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, muscular dystrophy, glaucoma, spastic quadriplegia, positive status for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), hepatitis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, sickle-cell anemia, Alzheimer's disease, agitation of dementia, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), autism, pain refractory to appropriate opioid management, diabetic/peripheral neuropathy, and spinal cord disease or severe injury.

There being no further business to come before the club, Mallory thanked our speakers and then adjourned the meeting with our motto: “Service Above Self.”
