DISTINGUISHED YOUNG WOMAN PROGRAM

Nicole Ruhnke serves the Southern Miss Alumni Association as the Assistant Director for Communications. Within this role, she manages the Association’s marketing functions and oversees all components of the development and production of the Association’s publications, primarily as the editor of The Talon – the University’s alumni magazine. A 2012 graduate of Leadership Pinebelt, Nicole received the inaugural Susan Walker Community Leadership Award and is now serving on the organization’s steering committee. She is also a member of the Pine Belt Chapter of the Public Relations Association of Mississippi, where she held several board positions including president in 2012. She is married to Timmy Ruhnke, and together they are actively involved at Venture Church, where Timmy serves as the Student and College Pastor.
 
Distinguished Young Woman of Petal, Meagan Smith, is a Petal High School Ambassador and varsity cheerleader. She is a mentor for the Big Brother/Big Sister organization and is involved in National Beta Club, National Honor Society, Interact Club, Mu Alpha Theta and Forrest General Hospital’s Spirit Girl organization. Most recently, Meagan won the Prepared Speaking Competition at the Health Occupations Students of America State Conference with her speech on “Leadership, Service and Engagement.” Meagan is the daughter of Jimmy and Sandi Smith of Petal.
