ROY SMITH, COUNTRY GIRL's CREAMERY
The history of Country Girls begins in the late 1930s when the Davis and Smith families started out in the dairy business. In the mid-1950s there were close to 350 dairies in Pearl River County and today there are only 3. Elder Fred Smith and Sister Louise Davis married and combined two of the families. With such strong farming blood running through his veins their son Kiahnell began dairy farming in 1973 on the same family land. Through ups and downs with the economy he sought a way to sustain his dairy farm thus, Country Girls Creamery began. With the efforts of his son Butch Smith, Country Girl’s Creamery was born March 2010.
The pair wanted to sustain the heritage that had been passed down and provide surrounding areas with a healthy alternative to “store-bought” milk. In the beginning Country Girl’s Creamery was focused on selling at the surrounding farmer’s markets, but since then we have been blessed to expand our business into many retail stores and continue the farmer’s markets we love so much.
The name of the creamery is not so easy to pin down. Kiahnell will tell you that the “country girls” are his herd of Jersey Cows that he milks twice a day. If you talk to Butch, he will tell you the “country girls” are his three daughters that show Jersey Cows in competition.
