Mallory Donald presided over the meeting. Lucy Sanguinetti provided the opening prayer. Courtney Payton led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Mallory led the club in the Four Way Test. The meeting was held at the Mugshots Bar and Grill in Hattiesburg.

Mallory reminded members to bring unwrapped toys to the meeting before December 15. The toys will be distributed by Canopy. She also reported that the wine tasting committee will meet one day next week. She will announce the date, time and meeting location by email. Anyone interested in working on the event is encouraged to let Mallory know.

Stew then conducted the 50/50 raffle. Mary Cromartie was the winner, however, she failed to draw the Queen of Hearts, so the pot grows. He introduced Karen Gallagher who is a visiting Rotarian from the Tarpon Springs, Florida club.

Mallory then installed two new Rotarians, Courtney Payton, and Lee Kemp.

Courtney then introduced today’s guest speaker, Dr. Phyllis Chambers-Berry. Dr. Berry complimented Rotarians for the good work they do for the community.

Dr. Berry assumed the duties of Chief Nursing Officer at Forrest General Hospital in September of 2019. She recently served as Director of Emergency and Nursing Staff Services at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Southaven, Mississippi. She earned a Masters of Science in Nursing from Loyola University, New Orleans. She went on to receive a Doctorate of Nursing Practice also from Loyola in 2016.

She grew up in the south side of Chicago and said if it were not for several volunteers in her life, she would not have been able to accomplish what she has accomplished.  Her grandmother put her into a high school where she learned to play the piano and violin. A volunteer at the school convinced her to join the swim team. After marriage her husband, another volunteer in her life, insisted that he be a “stay at home” dad and encouraged her to continue her education. He remained behind and took care of their six children.

She encouraged Rotarians to continue their service in the community. She says you never know whose life you will change by letting others stand on your shoulders.

There being no further business to come before the club, Mallory thanked Dr. Berry for her remarks. She then adjourned the meeting with our motto: “Service Above Self.”
