MATTIE CODLING
Curator, Walter Anderson Museum

Mattie Codling is the Director of Collections and Exhibitions at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art (WAMA) in Ocean Springs, MS. She has been a part of the WAMA staff since April 2016. Codling is responsible for exhibition research, development, and installation, as well as the care and promotion of the Museum’s permanent collection.

Codling completed her undergraduate work at The University of Mississippi where she double majored in Art History and Anthropology. She received her Master’s degree in Art History from Florida State University with a specialization in Museum Studies.

Contemporary art and the exploration of modernity through alternative media is a point of study for Codling. She has participated in numerous exhibitions of contemporary art and enjoys being introduced to new artists’ work that challenges viewers. A Southerner by birth, Codling is drawn to artwork that pulls from the region’s rich legacy, yet confronts it through new means of interpretation. “The state of Southern art is changing,” states Codling, “it is exciting to be a part of this creative surge that is deeply rooted in our culture.”

Codling has worked in the museum field for nine years. Her passion lies in uncovering the past through contemporary modes of interpretation. Her present work revolves around the art and legacy of American master, Walter Inglis Anderson.
